Read more about this transition in this BlogJunction post. ► ARSL held its Annual Conference on September 11-13, 2009, in Gatlinburg, Tennessee. Many of the conference presentations and handouts can be found on the ARSL website: http://www.arsl.info/annual-conference-awards-calendar/program-handout-files/ ► EBSCO Excellence in Small and/or Rural Public Library Service Award honors a public library serving a population of 10,000 or less that demonstrates excellence of service to its community as exemplified by an overall service program or a special program of significant accomplishment. A plaque and a $1,000 honorarium are presented annually at the ALA Annual Conference. Established in 1991. Sponsored by EBSCO Information Services. ► Library Journal's annual Best Small Library in America Award, sponsored by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, was created in 2005 to encourage and showcase the exemplary work of libraries serving populations under 25,000. View the archive of the October 7 webinar with Nancy Rosenwald, the library director of this year's winner, the Union County Carnegie Library of South Carolina. The library was recognized for its transformation into an "inclusive, modern, service-oriented, community center." Hear how the strategies and tactics applied over the past 3 years have brought renewal to library services in this tiny community in spite of its high unemployment rate and the library's shoestring budget. Nancy was joined by Library Journal's executive editor, Rebecca Miller, who provided an overview of the nomination process and details for next year's award in addition to the award's past winners.
